Rev Dr Mark S Burrows

Mark S. Burrows is professor emeritus of the Protestant University of Applied Sciences in Bochum, Germany. His most recent book is You Are the Future: Living the Questions with Rainer Maria Rilke (2024). Co-written with the Australian writer Stephanie Dowrick, this collection of essays draws on Rilke’s poems for the wisdom they offer in facing our inner doubts and outer struggles. During this day we will turn to Rilke’s early poems from The Book of Hours (1905) in Burrows’ first-ever English rendition of them in their original version (published as Prayers of a Young Poet [3rd revised edition 2023]) as well as his new translation of Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus (2024). Mark has led many programs at the Meditatio Centre since it opened a decade ago and is a longtime associate of the WCCM.

Startling, courageous, wise, consoling: such words aptly describe the book of “showings” left by an anchoress living in the later 14th – early 15th c., known to us as Julian of Norwich. An “unlettered” woman, as she described herself, she received sixteen “revelations of divine love” in midlife, on May 8, 1373. During this day-retreat we will explore her witness to God’s radically inclusive love and the compassion this calls us to embrace, for ourselves and others. Our probing of her visionary text will encourage us to see what it means that our lives are “oned” with God, and how we might live into her conviction that in every dimension of our lives “love is [God’s] meaning.”
