“Everyone who is left far from their source longs for the time when they were united with it.”
In Rumi’s poetry, the theme of awaiting is central to the spiritual journey. Waiting is never passive or empty; it is an active state of longing, desire, and openness to divine encounter. Rumi portrays the human soul as separated from its true source and therefore filled with yearning for reunion with the Beloved, a symbol for God. This longing creates a condition of expectancy in which the seeker learns patience, trust, and surrender.
Rumi suggests that spiritual growth occurs in the space between desire and fulfilment. The seeker learns to embrace uncertainty and to trust the hidden work of love.
Awaiting becomes a form of prayer, awakening deeper awareness and receptivity. Ultimately, Rumi’s poetry teaches that every experience of waiting contains the promise of union, for longing itself is evidence that the soul is already being drawn toward the divine.
“What you seek is seeking you.”
This enriches the idea of awaiting because the seeker is not simply waiting for God; God is already drawing the seeker towards divine union.
