The mystical path is universally symbolised as a journey.
For the Kabbalah, secret codes embedded in the Torah are understood to reveal the deep connotations of the journeys that comprise a recurring and central theme: In Genesis, the complex journeys of Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph are related, and in Exodus, the entire people journey from slavery to freedom, a deeply symbolic motif.
The potent symbols concealed in the Torah’s narratives—revealed in Kabbalistic commentaries—are powerful pointers to the deeper psychology of the journeys: Outward journeying equates to opening inwardly to the deep psyche, consciously flowing with the dynamics that fundamentally shape who we are, and thereby transforming the meaning we embody.
Ultimately, the journey is not historical … it is our path to presence in the present, and the profound secrets of the journey are the pointers to how we should approach our own individual spiritual journeys.
The inner meaning of the journeys narrated in the Hebrew Bible is one of the themes in Les’ new book, Kabbalistic Psychology and the Shadow of the Western Mind, copies of which will be available.
